May 31 - MIB (Media in Black) Day
Palawan broadcaster Fernando "Dong" Batul was gunned down early morning of May 22. He was the 5th journalist killed this year, the 42nd under the Arroyo administration and the 79th since 1986 when press freedom was supposed to have been restored. The hard-hitting journalist known as the "Bastonero ng Palawan" will soon be laid to rest.
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) invites all our colleagues in media to join us in bidding Dong Batul goodbye through a candle-lighting ceremony on May 31 at the Boy Scouts Circle (Timog cor. Morato streets, Quezon City) at 6 pm.
We also enjoin our colleagues to wear black t-shirts whole day of May 31 as our way of expressing our grief and outrage at the murder of another journalist.
We say: Enough is enough! Let us cease to be just observers and recorders to the death of democracy. Let us unite and fight back the threats to our lives and liberties.
Media organizations in various parts of the country (including in Baguio, Subic, Iloilo, Lucena, Sorsogon, Albay, Pampanga, Laguna, Bacolod, Tacloban, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Pagadian, General Santos and Ozamis), will also hold simultaneous candle-lighting ceremonies.

The Asia-Europe Forum for Young Photographers 2006 is intended for 21 participants (11 from Asia including 2 from the Philippines) and 10 Europeans and will last from 21 to 28 August 2006 in Manila, The Philippines. It is co-organised by the Asia-Europe Foundation, World Press Photo Foundation and the Philippine Center for Photojournalism.
The goals of the Asia-Europe Forum for Young Photographers 2006 (Manila, The Philippines) are:
1. To create a network of young talented photographers from Europe and Asia and to discuss the professional commonalties and differences in their working environments.
2. To draw attention to the opportunities that both markets provide, the business attitudes in both regions and to discuss potential sales strategies.
3. To improve the understanding of documentary photography and photojournalism and develop a better sense for excellent and/or new esthetical approaches to this type of work
It will consist of presentations by tutors, a practical assignment for the participants (2 days) and reviews of that assignment.
Please check http://asef.org for the weblinks to the Photo Forum 2003 in Amsterdam and the Photo Forum 2004 in Hanoi, which contain an overview on the programme, assignments and other information. These would be relevant references for you to have a better idea of the scope of the Forum.
In order to give each of the participants enough individual attention, there will be two Asian tutors (including one from the Philippines) and two European tutors. In terms of logistics and finance, please note that WPPF, Philippine Center for Photojournalism and ASEF are still securing funding to cover the cost of the Forum. Please note that the final decision on the selection of your student and the confirmation of the event, based on the confirmed securing of additional funding, will be known to you latest by 31 May 2006.

THE PHILIPPINE
JOURNALIST’S
CODE OF ETHICS
I shall scrupulously report and interpret the news, taking care not suppress essential facts nor to distort the truth by omission or improper emphasis. I recognize the duty to air the other side and the duty to correct substantive errors promptly.
I shall not violate confidential information or material given me in the exercise of my calling.
I shall resort only to fair and honest methods in my effort to obtain news, photographs and/or documents, and shall properly identify myself as a representative of the press when obtaining any personal interview intended for publication.
I shall refrain from writing reports which will adversely affect a private reputation unless the public interest justifies it. At the same time, I shall fight vigorously for public access to information, as provided for in the Constitution.
I shall not let personal motives or interests influence me in my performance of my duties; nor shall I accept or offer any present, gift or other consideration of a nature which may cast doubt on my professional integrity.
I shall not commit any act of plagiarism.
I shall not, in any manner, ridicule, cast aspersions on, or degrade any person by reason of sex, creed, religious belief, political conviction, cultural and ethnic origin.
I shall presume persons accused of crime of being innocent until proven otherwise. I shall exercise caution in publishing names of minors and women involved in criminal cases so that they may not unjustly lose their standing in society.
I shall not take unfair advantage of a fellow journalist.
I shall accept only such tasks as are compatible with the integrity and dignity of my profession, invoking the “conscience clause” when duties imposed on me conflict with the voice of my conscience.
I shall conduct myself in public or while performing my duties as journalist in such manner as to maintain the dignity of my profession. When in doubt, decency should be my watch word.
Editor’s Note: The Philippine Press Institute distributes the above code to newspapers so publishers can promote its observance.
